Shahab Uddin Muhammad Shah Jahan popularly known as Shah Jahan whose name means “King of the World” was the fifth Mughal emperor and most prolific builder in Indian history. Shah Jahan born as Prince Khurram on 5th January 1592, to Emperor Jahangir ruled the Indian Subcontinent from 1628 to 1658. According to the historian Shobita Punja "Shah Jahan was born during the height of Akbar's power," when most of India came under Mughal rule.
Emperor Shah Jahan was an able ruler and an efficient administrator and aimed at spreading the extent of Mughal Empire. During his reign, he constantly strived towards enlarging his empire. In 1639, he decided to shift his capital from Agra to New Delhii and constructed a new city northward on the banks of legendary Yamuna called Shahjahanabad present day Old Delhii
The period of his reign was the golden age of Mughal dynasty. According to some historian Milo Beach he was one of the richest men on earth, with trunks of emeralds, sapphires, rubies and diamonds passed out during court activities. He was also an avid lover of art and architecture, Shah Jahan had palaces and forts scattered like gemstones.
The important buildings of Shah Jahan were the Jama Masjid and Red Fort located at Delhii, the famous Pearl Mosque located at Agra Diwan-i-Am and Diwan-i-Khas in the fort of Delhi and the Taj Mahal .
In 1658, Shah Jahan fell seriously ill and, not unpredictably, a violent battle for succession broke out between his four sons. Though Shah Jahan favored the liberal Dara Shikoh but it was Aurangzeb who succeeded in his efforts and kept his aged father imprisoned until his death in the year 1666 and was buried in the magnificent tomb next to his wife.
